FAQs — BVI & Offshore Companies

Naming, directors, privacy and practical points for BVI and other offshore companies.

How should an offshore company name be proposed?

Names typically need a corporate ending such as Limited, Corporation, Incorporated (or Ltd., Corp., Inc.). Identical names are refused; restricted words (e.g. Bank, Insurance) are usually prohibited.

Can Chinese characters be used?

Not everywhere. Some jurisdictions (e.g. BVI, Cayman Islands, Samoa in certain cases) may allow Chinese names subject to local practice.

What is the minimum share capital?

It depends on the jurisdiction and your purpose. Ask us for guidance suited to your use case.

How many directors and shareholders are required?

Often a minimum of one director and one shareholder; the same person may hold both roles.

Are director/shareholder details publicly searchable?

Many offshore registries are less public than Hong Kong, but CRS/FATCA and beneficial-ownership rules may still apply.

What are the advantages?

Common reasons include holding flexibility, international contracting and asset segregation — always subject to legality and home-country tax consequences.
